Malorie Johnson

Marriage & Family Therapist, LMFT

I HELP families and individuals resolve conflict and inner turmoil that is preventing them from having fulfilling relationships and a joyful life.

About Me

I know an “about me” is supposed to literally be.. about me. I can touch on things like my education, where I come from, which therapy models I use and so on. But let’s be realistic for a second, most of you are going to care more about how YOU can benefit from therapy with me than you do about how I got to where I am today. Your therapeutic relationship with me will be a crucial part of this journey so let me begin by telling you which clients I typically have the most success with and then YOU can decide if you believe we’re a good fit.

Therapy is hard work, I will be the first to tell you that. Clients who show up to their appointments on time and ready to dig in will always have the most success.  I am not the type of therapist to plan out your session minute by minute for you, so it is important that you show up ready to process and uncover what is preventing you from experiencing your best relationships, experiences, and self. Don’t get me wrong, I will challenge you, push you, and hold you accountable. I simply want you to be responsible for your progress because I can’t do all the work for you and still expect you to reach your goals.

Clients who appreciate a good sense of humor and I typically get along quite well. Therapy can bring up a lot of uncomfortable emotions, but who has ever grown without being uncomfortable first?  That being said, I try to lighten the mood when it’s appropriate 🙂 Sarcasm is my middle name, after all.

On a serious note, though. My clients’ successes truly bring me joy and I want to make sure you feel 100% comfortable beginning a therapeutic journey with me. Feel free to schedule a free phone consultation and figure out if we are a good match!

Education

If you’re still reading, I’d say we’re off to a good start. So here is more about me.

  • Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, LMFT (License # XM5146)
  • Masters of Marriage and Family Therapy, Converse College
  • Bachelor of Arts, Eckerd College

My masters program was one of the most difficult things I have ever done. I had hundreds of hours of live supervised experience working with all types of clients. My supervisors and colleagues watched me do therapy behind two way mirrors for 3 hours per week, critiquing my work with their little clipboards. Needless to say, I am glad that’s over with. Talk about vulnerability HAH. I don’t know many therapists around this area who can say that, so I feel pretty unique in that aspect.

I combine and utilize several therapy models depending on what my clients need from me, but here are some of my favorites:

The Gottman Method (couples therapy)

Narrative Therapy

Solution Focused Therapy

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy or Cognitive Behavioral Play Therapy (kids/teens)

Just one more thing! As my license states, I am a MARRIAGE and FAMILY therapist. Which basically means regardless of whether I am seeing a client individually or in some sort of relational dynamic, I don’t believe anyone can be truly understood without the context of their relationships or family of origin. So yes… we’re going to get into the good stuff!
